“If we had 51% women in Congress, do you think we’d be debating access to contraception?” —Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (via think-progress)

Did ya hear? Lady reporters are "too sexy" for Twitter  → jessicavalenti.tumblr.com

One of the worst things about FishBowlDC’s article perpetuating sexism and the misrepresentation of women in the press? It was written by a woman.

If you actually look at the Twitter avatars FishBowlDC cites as examples (see image on the right), you may notice something right away:

These aren’t anywhere close to “sexpot” pics.

But then again, I guess attractive women pretty much always just look like we’re “asking for it” …

From Feministing founder Jessica Valenti’s tumblr tonight:

In case you didn’t see this gem, media and politics blog FishbowlDC thinks that female journalists should stop being so damn sexy in their Twitter avatars. They even provide some examples of these scandalously whorish women with a couple of happy looking ladyreporters, and ask readers to send in similarly slutty pics.

When taken to task over the blatant sexism of the post over Twitter, FishbowlDC devolved into…well, I’ll let you judge for yourself.

So in honor of FishbowlDC I’ve changed my twitter avatar.

Fuck you very much.

Oh, and if you want to see male journalists tweeting/changing their avatars in solidarity, check out the hashtag #pressdudesgonewild.

“We do not want to pay for our memories. The films that remind us of our childhood, the music that accompanied us ten years ago: in the external memory network these are simply memories. Remembering them, exchanging them, and developing them is to us something as natural as the memory of ‘Casablanca’ is to you. We find online the films that we watched as children and we show them to our children, just as you told us the story about the Little Red Riding Hood or Goldilocks. Can you imagine that someone could accuse you of breaking the law in this way? We cannot, either.” —‘We, the Web Kids,’ The Atlantic (via somethingchanged)

Birth Control With No Co-Pay ≠ A War On Religion

Jon Stewart to Catholic bishops:

“You’ve confused the war on your religion with not always getting what you want. It’s called being ‘part of a society.’ Not everything always goes your way!”

You know Republicans are losing the messaging “war” when Jon Stewart devotes two long segments to an issue.
